This 18th century Chateau lies in the heart of the beautiful Dordogne valley, the Limousin Riviera.

As soon as they saw it Anne and Jean-Philippe FRANCE fell in love with this elegant and charming property situated on high ground on the edge of the forest with magnificent views of the surrounding countryside and the lovely Dordogne river in the valley below.

Since they bought the Chateau in 1998 Anne and Jean Philippe have worked ceaselessly to restore it to its original splendour and create a welcoming and friendly atmosphere.

Seven years later after a massive amount of work and tender loving care they have, without doubt, achieved their objective and there are now 5 extremely elegant and beautifully furnished bedrooms each with en-suite bathroom and separate toilet.

For those who want to do their own thing there is a charming Gite independent of the main Chateau and with its own pool and children’s play area.

Greze is the ideal place to spend a holiday where you can either relax in the beautiful surroundings or take advantage of the on site facilities of swimming, horseriding, cooking courses and excursions. Nearby there are facilities for golf, canoeing, para-gliding, fishing and pot-holing.

The ancient Viscomte de Turenne in which Greze is situated contains some of France’s most historic sites including Rocamodor, Collonges-la-Rouge, Chateau de Castelnau, Abbaye d’Aubazine, Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne, Cloisters de Carennac, and Jardins d’Eyrignac. Also close by is the famous Gouffre de Padirac with its enormous limestone cavern and underground passages and waterways.

Whether for a weekend or a longer stay La Grèze offers you an unrivalled warm and friendly welcome and the opportunity to relax or discover, whichever you prefer.

Le Chateau de la Grèze appears in “Gites de France”.

The exact origins of Chateau de La Grèze are not certain. Some parts probably date back to 16th C. The first mention of the property appears in the Parish records of the Tulle diocese.
In L’Abbe Jean-bapiste Poulbriere there is a record of  it belonging to the Greze family in the middle of the17th C. It was then owned by several Limousin families and then in the middle of the 18th C. it was bought by Planchard de Cussac.

It was the Cussac family who really gave the Chateau its character with many of the present features being typical of 17thC. architecture. In the 19th C a chapel was consecrated. The family loved farming and a large area surrounding the chateau was used for food and particularly wine production, the famous "Vin Paillé".

From the second half of the 20thC the property gradually went into decline, much of the estate land was sold off and nature took over the area surrounding the chateau.
Even the lane down to Beaulieu became overgrown and difficult to find.

In 1990 an English couple purchased Grez from Baron Jean Planchard de Cussac.

But still the Chateau did not awake from its sleep. The large plane trees along the front of the terrace began to damage the foundations, the house appeared abandoned and destined to become a ruin. Only Sunday afternoon strollers saw it.

This was the situation when Anne and Jean Philippe bravely took over the property in 1998. They had the vision and the capacity for hard work to carry out a truly amazing transformation and restore it to its former glory and create a magnificent residence combining old-world charm with modern comfort.
